Happy Thursday, everyone!
The World Cup starts today, and Alameda is right in the middle of it. Australia's team is training on Bay Farm, the first Bay Area match is Saturday at Levi's, and a dozen local spots are throwing watch parties all tournament long.
That is just the start. Saturday also brings the Rock and Roll Beer Stroll, where we are giving away two pairs of tickets, plus Dashe Cellars turning 30 and Malaya's day party at Faction. Add a Corica Park truce, bus changes worth knowing, and a Webster Street dim sum spot you need to try.
Let's dive in!

Australia's World Cup Team Is Living on Bay Farm Island

The Socceroos, Australia's national soccer team, picked the Oakland Roots and Soul training facility at Harbor Bay Business Park as their official World Cup base camp. About 900 fans showed up June 3 for an open community practice, with Mayor Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft there to welcome the team. The 18,240-square-foot Bay Farm facility will be home base for at least the next two weeks: Australia opens against Turkey this Saturday in Vancouver, faces the USA on June 19, and closes group play June 25 at Levi's Stadium, a short drive down the road. The City and Its Golf Operator Just Made Peace Over Corica Park

The City of Alameda and Greenway Golf have settled their long-running legal fight over the Chuck Corica Golf Complex, with no money changing hands. Corica Park is a 333-acre complex on Bay Farm Island and has been the city's largest park since 1927. The settlement keeps discounted rates for Alameda residents in place, including special senior and youth rates, and the city keeps its right to fully audit the books. Both sides say they want to rebuild the partnership and keep Corica a premier public course. If you golf there, nothing about your tee time changes. That is the point. Read more →

Restaurant of the Week
East Ocean Seafood
1713 Webster St, Alameda | Dim sum 11am weekdays, 10am weekends, until 2:30pm | Dinner from 5pm
East Ocean has anchored Webster Street for three decades, and the dim sum carts are still rolling. It opened in Oakland Chinatown in 1983 and landed in Alameda in 1995. This is old-school Hong Kong style Cantonese: carts at lunch, white tablecloths and big lazy Susans at night. Restaurants like this are getting rare, and we have one right here.
Regulars come for the smoked black cod, baked in sweet cha siu sauce until the edges char, plus fresh-folded har gow and siu mai off the cart. Go with a group, point at what rolls by, and take it all in. I stopped in to film with them this week, watch the video below.
Meet Your Neighbors Over Dinner
The Alameda Dinner Club is coming up, and it’s where we pull together a group of Pulse readers, take over a few tables at a great local spot, and let the dinner do the rest.
You get paired with five neighbors, and by dessert, most tables feel like old friends. No apps, no awkward mixers, just good food and better company. Your ticket also helps keep the Pulse going.
Seats are limited, and they go quickly. Reserve your seat
