RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
Bake Sum
📍 1650 Park St (inside Alameda Marketplace), Alameda
This bakery has been all the rage as of late. We are talking an hour-long wait on the regular, three weeks in.
Bake Sum opened on May 9 inside Alameda Marketplace, taking over the spot Feel Good Bakery held for 21 years, and the line has not slowed down.
Owner Joyce Tang built the brand in Oakland on what she calls Asian Americana pastries, and the New York Times named her signature Croissubi (a croissant stuffed with Spam, seaweed, Parmesan, togarashi, and unagi sauce) one of the 25 best dishes in the country. The only other Bay Area bakery on that list was Tartine.
I went on opening day and made a video about my experience. And it is definitely a must-try if you haven’t been.
Alameda News

Alameda's Homeless Count Drops 46.8%
Alameda's homeless count dropped 46.8 percent in the last two years, more than three times the drop across all of Alameda County. The new number comes from the 2026 Point-in-Time count, a one-day headcount done by 1,300 volunteers on January 22. The federal government requires this count, and it decides how much homeless services funding the city gets next year. Mayor Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft said the drop is the result of programs like the Warming Shelter, Dignity Village, the Day and Night Center, Safe Parking, the Street Engagement Team, and emergency supportive housing. If you see changes on your block, you can reach the Street Engagement Team by calling 311. Read more →

$390 Million Alameda VA Clinic Cancelled, Congress Requires Explanation
A bill moving through Congress now requires Veterans Affairs to explain, within 60 days, why it cancelled the $390 million VA clinic that was planned for Alameda Point. The clinic was supposed to serve about 280,000 Bay Area veterans. Veterans Affairs cancelled the project in August 2025, saying the site had PFAS contamination, a type of toxic chemical. The City of Alameda has said Veterans Affairs never officially told them the project was cancelled. Reps. Lateefah Simon, Nancy Pelosi, and Kevin Mullin added the language to the FY2027 military and veterans funding bill. It now goes to the Senate, where Sens. Alex Padilla and Adam Schiff are pushing it through. Read more →
